The Guide for Providing Quality of Life for Alzheimer Patients
Peter V. Rabins, MD
(3 DVD series)

Communicating with the Alzheimer Patient
Order# AD202
Through resident vignettes, this program presents the many challenges of communicating with Alzheimer’s patients throughout the stages of the disease. As a result of these communication barriers, these patients are often ignored. Content includes: the importance of establishing a link with patients; and specific strategies for maintaining communication with confused and withdrawn residents. Actual demonstrations with residents and guidelines from staff show how to enter the world of the Alzheimer’s patient and “learn their language.”

Maintaining Independence and Involving the Alzheimer Patient
Order# AD203
With resident vignettes, this program explores ways to maximize independence, function and involvement. Content includes: encouraging independence; developing individualized plans responsive both to the stage of the disease and the previous interests of the individual; avoiding activities that will be frustrating or potentially cause catastrophic reactions; and knowing when to revise plans to meet changing needs of the patient.

Recognizing Pain
Order# AD204
No one should be in pain. While some residents can help the health care team by describing their pain, in many instances the person with Alzheimer disease can't. Dr. Rabins helps caregivers identify ways in which they can determine if an individual with Alzheimer disease is experiencing pain. Again, the key is knowing the residents well. Change becomes the "call bell" alerting staff to pain.
